Section Description

This graduate-level course provides an examination of the legal, ethical, political, economic, and social aspects of global health. It also explores the emergence of global health law as a multilateral tool to address health disparities and improve the health of the vulnerable. At the completion of this course, students will be equipped with knowledge, skills and abilities to: Recount the historical basis for modern global health laws and governance structures; Identify the major international agreements that address health; Describe the role of major public and private sector players in global health governance; Describe the forums through which global health governance is debated and formalized; Discuss how global health policy impacts domestic policy through specific national case studies; Discuss current strengths and weaknesses in existing global health governance; Contribute to global policy processes in an appropriate manner. The textbook is Lawrence O. Gostin's Global Health Law, ISBN 978-0-674-72884-4, published by Harvard University Press.

Section Expectation

This is a relatively short (40 days), intensive course. During that time, students will be expected to participate daily in the discussion forums and to write four short papers on global health law topics.


Grades will be based on students' discussion posts and papers.
