More Information

Section Description

Field Experience is designed to provide an opportunity to apply the concepts and principles of HDFS in a setting in the real world. Students work in a field site, usually an agency or program that serves residents of the local area. A minimum of six credits of Field Experience are required for majors. HDFS 296 is a required course for HDFS majors, taken typically in the senior year. Students must have completed the introductory core courses and the required 100 level courses before enrolling in HDFS 296. HDFS 296 may be taken during the summer, if a suitable placement can be arranged. HDFS 296 does not count toward the 200 level seminar requirements for the HDFS Major Concentration for Education majors or for the Minor in HDFS. A guide to planning and initiating the Field Experience is available from the instructor,

Section Expectation

Students participate for several hours a week in a program or agency that serves individuals or families. Sites are chosen in conjunction with the instructor, taking into account students’ interests and professional goals. In addition to the service component of the course, students read professional literature related to the experience, keep a reflective journal and complete assignments focused on understanding and analyzing the program in light of research and theory covered in HDFS courses.

Grades are based on completion of the assignments and the quality of reflection and analysis therein.
