Section Description

This course is a survey of linguistics. The major goal of the course is to introduce students to the field of linguistics, the analysis of linguistic data, and some of the broad issues surrounding the world’s languages. It emphasizes the theory and methodology of the main areas of the field (phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax). Students will analyze data samples from the world’s languages in terms of their sound segments, sound patterns, word structure, and sentence structure. The remainder of the course will be divided among other areas of linguistics, including lexical semantics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, language acquisition, and animal communication. The primary objectives of the course are: - to describe and give examples of ways in which human languages are similar to and different from one another - to use basic linguistic terminology to describe language - to use the tools of linguistic analysis to analyze the patterns of sound, word and sentence structure of a language - to explain the ways languages change over time - to describe the use of language in various social contexts - to discuss research and findings in the areas of first and second language acquisition - to evaluate evidence of animal communication - to describe how and where language is processed in the brain
