Section Description

This course offers a multi-layered survey of U.S. political, economic, social, and cultural history from the seventeenth century to the mid-nineteenth century. Through power-point lectures, the course textbook, short readings on focus topics, and film-viewing students will explore a variety of subjects. These include (1) colonial America; the War for Independence; forming a new nation (2) government development and the evolution of political parties; the process of defining democracy; the new market economy (3) the institution of slavery; women’s history; Indians and the new nation; reform era; immigration; religion; technology; daily life (4) the origins and consequences of the Civil War. At the completion of this course, students will have acquired both a broad foundational knowledge of pre-1865 U.S. history and an understanding of specific ways in which multiple voices and multiple experiences shaped this dynamic era.

Section Expectation

This course combines lecture and discussion formats. Each week students are required to have completed their assignments by the dates listed in the course syllabus. These assignments are as follows (1) weekly readings and quizzes to help students measure their comprehension of the reading materials (2) periodic viewing of short films available on-line through the Bailey-Howe Library (3) participation in class discussion responding to professor and classmate posts (5) a midterm and a final which will be essay papers based on lecture and readings.


Grades will be based upon weekly assignments listed in "Section Expectations" and class participation; a midterm exam; a final exam.
