Keith Primeau had two goals and an assist and Patrick Roy came within six minutes of a shutout as unbeaten Canada gained a measure of revenge by shutting down the United States, 4-1.

Primeau's linemate, Joe Sakic, had a goal and two assists for Canada, which was facing the United States for the first time since Team USA's stunning victory in the decisive third game of the World Cup Finals in 1996.

Team Canada (3-0) secured the top seed in Group C and a quarterfinal matchup with winless Kazakhstan , which finished last in Group D.

Brett Hull's goal with 5:56 remaining helped avoid a shutout for the United States (1-2), which almost certainly will finish third in Group D and face Russia or the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals.

Canada was down two men for 1:40 after Sakic was penalized for holding at 13:56 of the first period and Rob Zamuner went off for holding 20 seconds later. But Hull's one-timer from the left faceoff circle hit the far goalpost and Roy stopped the St. Louis Blues' sniper twice more during the American power play.

Zamuner, a controversial selection for the Team Canada roster, came out of the penalty box, took a pinpoint diagonal pass from Wayne Gretzky and tapped in a shot from the right doorstep with 3:30 to go in the opening period.

The U.S. carried the play in the second period, but Roy repeatedly bailed out Canada. He smothered Pat LaFontaine's shot from the left doorstep early in the period, turned aside another chance that deflected off the skate of a Canadian defender and denied LaFontaine on a point-blank chance with 13 minutes to play.

Roy, a glaring omission from Canada's roster for the World Cup, also got his left shoulder on Mike Modano's wrist shot from the slot and stopped Keith Tkachuk from close range midway through the second.

Zamuner went to the penalty box again for holding with 6:35 to go in the period after preventing Hull from getting to a rebound of John LeClair's spinning shot from the left circle. Just 12 seconds later, Canada scored a controversial shorthanded goal with Primeau cashing in as teammate Steve Yzerman bowled into goaltender Mike Richter. Referee Bill McCreary allowed the goal to stand, doubling Canada's lead.

Primeau sent Theoren Fleury and Sakic in on a 2-on-1 and Sakic was left alone in front to tap in Fleury's rebound for a 3-0 lead with 1:41 to go in the period.

Primeau got his second of the game six minutes into the second period, redirecting a perfect cross-ice pass from Mark Recchi, who was playing his first game after replacing the injured Paul Kariya on Team Canada's roster.

Hull finally solved Roy in the waning minutes, drifting across the low slot before lifting a wrist shot over the goalie's glove.
