Fleming Museum Collections Digitization Project

The Museum Collections Digitization Project continues full steam ahead, with over 47% of our collections cataloging information entered onto our searchable and detailed database.

The project began in 1999 with Margaret Tamulonis as project manager. Most recently, during the spring semester of 2002, her team of twelve students has been working on data entry and pilot projects for capturing digital images of the collections have begun. Ultimately, these images and information about the collections will be made available via the Web.

Perkins Museum of Geology Digital Arhive of Human-Induced Landscape Change

K-16 students are creating a web-based archive of historical and modern photograph pairs documenting 150 years of human interaction with the Vermont landscape: Students learn how to use GPS, a digital camera, and computer imaging equipment as part of ongoing research to document change in the Vermont landscape from the mid-1800s to the present. University geologists introduce high school students to the geomorphology and the settlement history of Vermont. High school teachers, with the aid of student and teacher manuals we have prepared, lead students through the research process and focus classroom study on interdisciplinary concepts related to environmental science and human-induced landscape change of their local areas.

To produce a web-based digital archive of photographs documenting two centuries of landscape change while introducing you to geology, human-induced landscape change, and various forms of computer technology. The project is funded by the National Science Foundation and the University of Vermont.

Perkins Geology Museum Project

This archive was created to enhance research and educational access to the Perkins Geology Museum collection. When completed, the database will contain over 40,000 images from the museum’s collection, including:

Images were photographed or scanned using a SPOT digital camera, NIKON slide camera, or a VIDAR scanner. Image content was reviewed by a geologist and converted to USMARC records using UVM's Bailey Howe Voyager software.

Pringle Herbarium

The Pringle Herbarium, housing over 330,000 specimens, is the second the largest plant collection in New England. A digitaziation project is in progress, but not yet available for web viewing.

Zadock Thompson Natural History Collection

The Thompson collections are housed in Torrey Building along with the Pringle
Herbarium(Botany Dept.). This collection was formerly referred to as the Perkins Zoological collection named after George H. Perkins, a teacher of science and former Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Zadock Thompson is the founder of the original collection in the early 19 th century. He graduated from UVM in 1823 and is noted for publishing the History of the State of Vermont (1833) and the History of the State of Vermont, Natural, Civil and Statistical (1842). His home was built on the west side of the campus green and was later moved to 466 S. Prospect St. when Waterman building was built in its place. This house now is known as the Thompson-Torrey House and is used by the university for the Employee Assistance Program.

Vermont Cultural Heritage Digitization Center (Proposed)

In response to a inquiry from an potential donor, several groups from around campus who are interested in digitization projects got together to write a proposal. Although the group disbanded, it has recently come back together to attempt to develop a campus-wide effort to coordinate digitization efforts. A one-day workshop planned by the Perkins project on Aug. 9 will include a meeting of this group. Meanwhile, the list archives and links to related docs can be found at: http://list.uvm.edu/archives/vchdc.html

Some of the pilot projects considered in that proposal and still on the table can be found in the draft at: http://www.uvm.edu/~hag/vchdc/vchdcfinaldraft.html
