Nate & Laurie Mackey
They first met at Grove City College, Calderwood Hall, Room 110. They were married on August 14, 1999 Fishkill, NY. Since then they have lived in Albany, NY; Mahopac, NY; and currently reside in Richmond, VA.
Richmond, Virginia – As they have been told often, the perfect place to live! Just 2 hours west of the beach, east of the mountains, south of D.C., and north of ???! Also, a substantially improved winter experience compared to up north!
They live in an apartment, have no kids, and had three tropical fish
which promptly died after about 20 minutes with them.
2002 "Year in Review"
Hello family! Merry Christmas! Well, the past year turned
out to be rather eventful for us, including 2 moves, a new apartment, a
new job, and a few other “little” changes! Nate graduated this past
May with his Master’s Degree in School Guidance and Counseling. He
was relieved to finally be done with school, as well as his role as “Drive-Thru
Support Specialist” at Dunkin’ Donuts. In early summer we packed
up all our belongings and moved from our home of three years in Albany,
NY, to Laurie’s parents’ house in Mahopac, NY. (This move involved
a horrible U-Haul experience which we don’t have room for here, but we’ll
be happy to share at a later date!)
While in Mahopac, Nate picked up his newest hobby. . . fishing! This means that in his spare time when he’s not doing it or reading about it, he is definitely talking about it! Laurie, like it or not, can actually tell you the difference between a crankbait and a spinnerbait. We also used this time to travel up and down Virginia while Nate interviewed and Laurie attempted to read a map without getting carsick. All of the interviewing did pay off, as Nate was offered and accepted a job in a suburb just north of Richmond, VA. He is the 8th grade Guidance Counselor at Stonewall Jackson Middle School and is having a wonderful, positive experience – a definite answer to prayer. So, in July we again packed up a U-Haul (against our better judgment!) and moved ourselves to Richmond, VA. We found a nice apartment just west of the city, and right now are pretending that we will live here forever and will never have to pack another box again!
So, we are slowly but surely getting adjusted to our new home. We are church-hunting and finding this to be a very different process than up north. We opened the phone book to “Churches” the first week we were here and just kept turning and turning and turning. We are amazed at how many Baptist churches alone it is possible to have in a five-mile radius! So, needless to say, we will not be visiting all of them, and hope to settle into a church family soon. Laurie is also job-hunting as she has decided not to pursue teaching Spanish at this time and is hoping to try some different fields. These are two areas where we would certainly appreciate your prayers! A neat part of this experience has been the opportunity to get to know your cousin/niece/second cousin (depending on who you are), Lynn Pendleton, her husband Penn, and son Ethan. They are special people and have played a large part in helping us feel welcome in Richmond.
All in all, we are enjoying Virginia. We haven’t developed any southern accents yet, although a y’all occasionally pops out of Nate’s mouth since he’s working with the kids all day! You’re all very welcome to visit if you’re ever in or near the area – we have a very comfortable air mattress! ? We have definitely been blessed by the Lord’s provision this past year, and trust that you have seen His faithfulness as well. We love you and are keeping you in our prayers.
Love, Nate and Laurie
