RAN is a collaborative project bringing scientists, engineers, developers, homeowners, and regulators together to consider the challenging problem of stormwater management in developing watersheds. Led by a research team from the University of Vermont, RAN evaluated the environmental, social and economic costs and benefits associated with various options for stormwater control, and, while doing so, developed an interactive process to help communities better reduce the impacts of stormwater runoff.

An important objective of the RAN project was to provide useful information about stormwater and its management to as wide an audience as possible. To help achieve this goal, we reorganized the RAN website to make it as useful as possible to both lay and professional audiences.

• For individuals or neighborhoods just confronting issues related to stormwater and its management, our website provides user-friendly storm water basics and a brief introduction to many of the best management practices available for managing stormwater impacts. Several useful local, state and federal stormwater websites are also listed for those wanting more information.
• For town engineers and planners and others wanting more technical information, the website provides a summary describing each of the major research and demonstration efforts completed under the RAN umbrella and a series of Fact Sheets giving more specifics on practical program results.
• For those wishing to dig deeper and get more detailed information about project design or review data generated by the research elements of the program, the website includes a list of project data.

RAN is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) funded project. We thank former U.S. Senator James Jeffords for his support in starting the project. The contributions of the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, the City of South Burlington, and the residents of Butler Farms/Oak Creek Village in South Burlington have been critical to the success of the project.
