Who can use Zoo?
Anyone who has a Moose account can access the Zoo cluster once your account has been enabled for the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE). Initially accounts with research, instruction and other special needs were being given priority in the move to Zoo, but now anyone can have their account enabled. By the end of the year all Moose accounts are expected to be enabled.
WHY ZOO?
Zoo is a new computer that provides all the same functions as Moose. In fact, Zoo is a cluster of computers that includes Moose, which means that your Zoo account (login) name is the same as your Moose account name, your email address stays the same, and all your email and other files are instantly present on Zoo.
You can still use your Moose account if you want to.
LOGGING INTO ZOO
You can access the new account via "telnet" to zoo.uvm.edu and logging in with your moose username and your new zoo password. All your files on moose will be available and the environment is virtually identical.
YOUR ZOO PASSWORD
Your zoo account password is the last seven digits of your barcode. It is recommended that you change your password upon your first login. It is perfectly acceptable to use the same password you used to use on moose. The command to change your password is simply: passwd
For example:
[telnet to zoo.uvm.edu]
AIX Version 4...
login: acntname [same account name as on moose]
acntname's Password: [last 7 digits of your id "bar code"]
acntname@gnu.uvm.edu> [note prompt, which shows which host you are connected to]
acntname@gnu.uvm.edu> passwd [command to change password]
old password: [last 7 digits of your id "bar code"]
new password: [same as moose password if you want]
reenter new password: [to guard against typing errors]
HOW ZOO WORKS
Zoo uses IBM's new Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) software which provides a "single system image" for multiple computers. With DCE when new computers are added, it is not necessary to have separate systems, separate files, separate accounts, separate passwords, etc. Both IBM and UVM have tested the software as thoroughly as is practical. However, as with any new system, there are risks of both performance and reliability problems. Should there be a problem with zoo, your moose account still exists and any changes you make to your files using zoo will be reflected on moose.
YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS:
Your moose email address will continue to work on zoo. For most folks there is no need to change anything: email to your account at moose, zoo or gnu will all get to to you since they all share the same mail spool. Note that connecting to zoo currently results in a connection to gnu, and your zoo return address will be acntname@gnu.uvm.edu.
EMAIL LISTS
If you are a list-owner or a member or a closed list (most lists are not closed), your return address must match your owner/subscriber address. You may wish to change your subscription or list-owner address. Contact the helpline or John Ryder (jsr@moose.uvm.edu or 6-1183) if you need help with this.
** DO NOT FORWARD YOUR EMAIL FROM MOOSE TO ZOO **
It is not necessary and since moose and zoo share the same spool system, this will create an email loop.
DESKTOP EMAIL:
We HIGHLY RECOMMEND the use of desktop email (POP and IMAP) systems such as Eudora, Netscape and PC-PINE. Folks on the campus network who have been moved to zoo are expected not to routinely use PINE on zoo. If you have not converted to a desktop mailer for on-campus email, please do so now. Contact the helpline if you need help in making the switch. If you are already using one of these systems with moose, you should change the following settings:
SMTP server: smtp.uvm.edu
POP or IMAP account: acntname@zoo.uvm.edu
your email address: acntname@zoo.uvm.edu
(where acntname is the name of your account on moose/zoo)
DIAL-UP ACCESS
To access Zoo via modem, connect to the UVM dial-up menu as usual, specify option 8 (Other hosts) and type zoo at the prompt:
dial 658-5004 per usual
select 8 on the menu (other hosts)
type zoo as the host name
