PeopleTools 8.55 for FSCM and PeopleSoft 9.2 Upgrade

PeopleSoft 9.1 Upgrade Project Charter

PeopleSoft FSCM 9.2 and PeopleTools 8.55 for HCM and FSCM Upgrade Project Overview

The focus of the PeopleSoft 9.2 upgrade as well as the PeopleTools 8.55 project is to continue improving services to the University community and maintain our long-term investment in the Oracle PeopleSoft administrative suite.

UVM purchased the PeopleSoft administrative suite including the Financials, Human Resources and EPM systems in 2004.  Given the constant demand for system change based on regulation changes and demand for new services, as well as increased speed of technological changes, this software is constantly updated.  This means that continuous updates to our production systems must be made, and major upgrades which provide new functionality, performance and technology updates will generally need to occur every few years. This should be looked at as the new state of affairs; software updates will continually be released and we will need to apply them in order to stay current.

UVM must upgrade to maintain support and to have an upgrade path to the future Oracle/PeopleSoft versions. The upgrade will also put us in a position to be able to leverage new and improved functionality within the PeopleSoft software.

While sometimes there is value in including many new things in an initial upgrade project, other times it is good to take a more incremental approach, completing the upgrade, then adding onto that. This model is especially relevant given Oracle's new model for delivering new functionality.  Also, since maintaining an upgrade environment for an extended period of time is risky and not advised, there is a limit to the amount of new functionality that we will have the resources to include. It could be important if for some reason it was advantageous to do something at the time of the upgrade go-live. Efficiencies in testing could be gained by including new functionality in the rollout, but also, combining can mean there are more ‘moving parts’.

The primary goal is to complete the upgrades so that current functionality continues to work. Enhancements or the rollout of new functionality is not the primary goal of the upgrade project. Analysis will indicate whether there is enough time and enough resources to include new functionality in the initial go lives, or if that work should be prioritized for after the upgrades.

We will know that we have been successful if each system is upgraded to PeopleSoft version 9.2 and to PeopleTools 8.55 ( on different schedules) and those who use the software are able to conduct their work without interruption or slowdown. The number of calls for support and footprints should not increase over our current volume after an initial period of adjustment time of two months.

The HCM 9.2 Upgrade was completed first, in the Spring of 2016.
The PeopleTools 8.55 upgrade for HCM was completed in the Spring of 2017.
The FSCM / Financials PeopleTools 8.55 Upgrade will occur in the Fall of 2017.
The FSCM 9.2 Upgrade will occur in the Spring of 2018.

More information about project phases and committees will be posted soon.
