Tuesday, Dec 23, 2008 - Module 1, Introduction to the LCP website

Your first look at the image archive that we will be using for this course.

Assignment: There are three things to do
before 5 pm Tuesday, December 23.  First, read and click through Module 1; this is a critical introduction to the course and the web site we will depend on. Make sure to give your self at least two hours to do this part of the assignment. Second, prepare a written assignment and submit via blackboard as an Assignment.  Third, do a posting to the group introducing your self using the blackboard "Discussions Board".


Wednesday, Dec 24, 2008 - Module 2, Vermont Geology

A very brief introduction to the geologic history and rock types that shape Vermont as we know it.

Assignment: Written assignment submitted before 5 pm Wednesday

Dec 26, 2008 - Module 3, Humans and Geology shape the landscape

A little bit of Vermont history and a lot of Vermont images showing how humans interacting with the geology of Vermont shape the landscapes of today.

Assignment: Readings to be done and posting to the group before
5 pm Friday, December 26 using the blackboard "Discussion Board".


Monday, Dec 29, 2008 -
Module 4, Describing images

A day spent practicing the art of image description. Your work will help enrich the LCP archive.

Assignment: Submit descriptions to the Landscape Change Program website using the comment tool on each image before
5 pm Monday, December 29.


Wednesday, Dec 31, 2008-
Module 5, Preparing and submitting your proposal

After a week of learning about the archive and Vermont history, you will be preparing a detailed proposal for creating a scrapbook to share with the community that accesses the LCP archive. Your scrapbook will use the most interesting images you can find in the archive to tell a compelling story of humans and their interaction with the Vermont landscape.

Assignment: Proposal posted to the group for comment before

Friday, January 2, 2008 -
Module 6, Critiquing student proposals

Over the weekend, you'll be writing short constructive critiques of two other students' proposals for scrapbooks offering suggestions for how the proposals could improve.

Assignment: Critiques posted no later than Friday, January 2 at 5 pm using the blackboard "Discussion Board".


Monday-Tuesday,
January, 5 and 6, 2008 - Module 7, Background research

You'll be writing a short, two page research paper citing at least eight sources and providing the factual background for the scrapbook you plan to prepare.

Assignment: Research papers posted no later than
Tuesday, January, 6 at 5 pm using the blackboard "Discussions" tool.


Wednesday-Thursday,
January 7 and 8, 2008 - Module 8, Preparing your draft scrapbook

You will be working on the web to find and download images and in PowerPoint to create a first draft of your scrapbook for sharing with others in the class and eventually the world through the Landscape Change Program web site.

Assignment: Draft scrapbook (PowerPoint) posted no later than
Thursday, January 8 at 5 pm using the blackboard "Discussions" tool.


Friday, January 9, 2008 -
Module 9, Critiquing student scrapbooks

You will critique other students' scrapbooks offering each a series of suggestions to improve their work.

Monday, January 12, 2008 -
Module 10, Final scrapbook submission

Using all the critiques you have been given, improve your module through careful editing of both images and text.

Assignment: Final scrapbook (PowerPoint) submitted as a blackboard "Assignment " no later than
Monday, January 12 at 5 pm.

Tuesday, January 13, 2008 - FACE to FACE meeting (7 pm)

We will meet as a group in the third floor computer lab in Delehanty Hall (the Geology building on the Trinity Campus) to discuss the remaining assignment for the course and for training in GPS use and image uploading. 

Assignment: Bring your own GPS if you have one.

MEET AT 7 pm in the evening


Friday, January 16, 2008 - Module 11, Reshot proposal due

You will write a short (paragraph-long) proposal describing what type of images you will reshot and what types of landscape change you expect to find.  You will prepare and submit (in excel) as list of the LS# for the 25 images you will try and reshot.

Assignment: Proposal posted using the blackboard "Discussions" tool. no later than 5 pm, Friday January 16, 2007


Wednesday, April 29, 2008 - Module 12, Reshots and summary due

Get into the field to observe and document landscape change!

Assignment: Have reshot and uploaded to the Landscape Change site (along with correct GPS coordinates) at least 20 images that are related by topic or geographic area.  Submit a one page discussion of the changes you observed in the landscape between then and now.  Use the blackboard Assignment tool for your paper submission and the landscape site for your image submission.
