Asian Studies Outreach Program

Summer Institute in Japan for Vermont Educators

Applications now available for teachers interested in an overseas program in Japan

The Asian Studies Outreach Program, with a generous grant from the Freeman Foundation, will conduct a 3-week intensive overseas institute in Japan for K-12 educators in Vermont. The institute is for K-12 educators who have little or no prior background on Japan and who wish to begin incorporating Japan content into their classrooms. The program is open to elementary and secondary teachers of Social Studies, English, Music, Art, LOTE, librarians. Administrators and librarians are also eligible to apply.

Prior to the start of the overseas program will be three daylong planning sessions which will cover a wide variety of topics relating to Japan, including history, politics, literature, business, and the arts. While overseas the educators will visit historic sites, schools, participate in a homestay and have multiple opportunities to experience typical daily life in Japan by visiting Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima, Miyajima, and Okayama. The primary purpose of these planning sessions and overseas activities is to introduce educators into all aspects of Japanese society so that they can return to their schools and begin incorporating Japan content into their classes.

The Institute will have one program director but will draw upon the expertise from multiple guest speakers from the University of Vermont, Middlebury College, and other universities and schools in Japan.

The three planning sessions will be in the Spring 2015, and the overseas program will be from June 28-July18, 2015. There will be only 10 participants selected for the Institute on Japan and Its Culture. Each participant will receive Freeman Foundation funding to offset the cost of the 3-week program, and the remaining program fee includes $1,950 and the cost of 3 summer UVM credits.

Completed applications are due by December 20, 2014th. Successful candidates will be notified by December 23rd. If you have any questions address.
