UVM Vineyard: 2013 Vine Phenology

UVM Horticulture Research Center, South Burlington, VT

The UVM Vineyard is a research/demonstration site that has eight winegrape and eight table grape varieties. The cold climate winegrape varieties are part of a national evaluation of winegrape varieties associated with the USDA NE1020 Project, a USDA NIFA Specialty Crops Research Initiative Project (Northern Grape Project), and a UVM Agric. Exp. Station Research Project. It was planted in 2007, using a randomized complete block experimental design of six blocks with four-vine plots of each winegrape variety per block. The vines are being trained to a high-wire cordon system The soil is a well-drained Windsor loamy sand; drip irrigation has been installed. The table grape varieties are planted in two-vine plots along the perimeter of the vineyard and are there for demonstration purposes.

Notes on Methods:

Vines are individually assessed to determine what stage on the BBCH-scale the most developed bud/shoot/flower/berry is at.
Many stages are present on a single vine at one time.
Only buds within the fruiting zone (8" below top wire and above on high wire cordon trellis system) are assessed.
Vines without buds within the fruiting zone are not included in the assessement or in calculations.
Results shown below only include vines with growth in the fruiting zone.
Cultivars are planted in six four-vine (winegrape) panels or six two-vine (tablegrape) panels.
Values assessed for individual vines within the panels are averaged, then the six panel averages are averaged to determine the mean for the cultivar.
NOTE: When a percent of VINES are a certain stage, the does NOT indicate that all BUDS are at that stage.
i.e. 50% of vines at budbreak may only have 10% of buds at budbreak.
Tables below show percent of vines at each stage for each date that assessments were performed.
