Study Abroad Approved Programs

What is an 'Approved' Program?

An approved program is one in which a previous UVM student has participated, or a program similar to one in which a UVM student has participated, for which some academic credit has transferred back to UVM. Please be sure to do your research carefully: While credit may transfer for students in one major, or even a minor, at UVM, credit may not be eligible to transfer for all majors or minors. Additionally, please note that with a list of more than 900 study abroad sites, it is impossible for UVM staff to assess all aspects of an individual site. As such, it is important that you ask good questions of program providers regarding safety, cultural immersion opportunities, and other programmatic aspects about which you and your families have goals and expectations.

Program Types

If you haven't already, please see our advising section to learn about the types of approved programs, including exchange programs.

Did not find a program that meets your academic needs?

If you cannot find a study abroad program that meets your academic and personal goals, you have two options. First, you can take a leave of absence from UVM and participate on the non-approved program. Taking a leave of absence will not release financial aid nor will your course selection be reviewed by the Office of Transfer Affairs before leaving UVM. Secondly, you can complete a petition requesting permission to participate on a non-approved study abroad program. You must meet with your regional study abroad advisor to discuss your goals and options. If warranted, you will continue with completing the lengthy petition form and return it to the OIE. Review of the petition will take up to 3 weeks and there is no guarantee that the petition will be granted.

The deadline for submitting this paperwork to the OIE is May 10th for Winter break (January) & Spring semester programs and November 10th for Fall, Academic Year & Summer programs.

Please Note:
The University of Vermont is beginning a review of our approved programs list. You are strongly encouraged to follow the study abroad process timeline and not apply to any program unless you have already met with a study abroad regional advisor.
