Questioning the Author

Questioning the Author conditions students to look behind the literal interpretation of text, and to think about what the author is saying or implying.  Authors have opinions and make decisions about what to include, so it is important for readers to understand the author’s perspective and to use problem-solving questions to monitor their comprehension as they read.

    •    Who is the author? What is the author’s perspective?

    •    How is the writing structured? Is the structure effective?

    •    What does the author assume that we already know?

    •    What is the author trying to communicate? What is the author’s purpose?

    •    What information do you still want to know?
