Reciprocal Teaching/Posse
Reciprocal Teaching
has the teacher and student take turns leading a dialogue that covers a
section of the text.
-
Questioning. The “teacher”
asks questions before, during, and after the reading.
-
Summarizing. Students identify
the main idea and supporting details.
-
Predicting. Students make
predictions about future content.
-
Clarifying. The “teacher”
helps students clarify difficulties with the text (e.g. unfamiliar vocabulary,
unclear referent words, or disorganization).
POSSE is a strategy
that combines reciprocal teaching with semantic mapping and/or graphic organizers.
-
Predict text ideas after
a brief glance at the text and then activate prior knowledge by brainstorming
the topic.
-
Organize the predictions
and prior knowledge into a semantic map and/or graphic organizer.
-
Search for the structure
of the text.
-
Summarize the main idea(s)
in another semantic map and/or graphic organizer.
-
Evaluate comprehension
by comparing the semantic maps, clarifying information by asking questions,
and predicting what information will be in the next text section.
