My personal links.

I am currently an Associate Professor at University of Vermont in the philosophy department, where I teach Introduction to Philosophy, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Language, and Metaphysics. Before that I was a graduate student at Rutgers University.

Prior to graduate study, I received a B.S. in Engineering at University of California, Berkeley, worked as an engineer in California, and then received B.A.'s in Religion and Philosophy at Florida State University.

My dissertation tries to dissolve some of the problems of material constitution by applying some philosophy of language to traditional metaphysical puzzles. My more recent work continues this approach but extends it beyond material constitution to personal identity, modality, and reference. Unlike most metaphysicians, I am therefore quite anti-metaphysical in my approach to metaphysics. The following quote, from Michael Dummett, seems especially apt:
Philosophy attempts, not to discover new truths about the world, but to gain a clear view of what we already know and believe about it. That depends upon attaining a more explicit grasp of the structure of our thoughts; and that in turn on discovering how to give a systematic account of the working of language, the medium in which we express our thoughts. I have a page of philosophy links, as well as a page of links that I commonly use in my own research. Plus, I have a page of free advice on writing a philosophy paper, buying philosophy books, selecting a graduate school, etc. (always under construction!)

On the lighter side, I have a page of practical science puzzles for those who enjoy a challenge.
