FACTS ABOUT BICYCLE THEFT

Over 1.5 million bicycles are stolen nation wide every year. A majority of them were locked improperly, locked with an inferior device, or simply not locked at all. The key is doing whatever you can to cut down on a criminal’s opportunity.

Most people, when buying a bicycle lock become more concerned with the actual locking end of the unit- a combination lock instead of a key lock, thinking it makes locking the bicycle easier and more secure by removing the possible element of losing the key. However this overlooks the potentially weakest part of a lock- the cable or shackles. Cables just aren’t meant to withstand an attack by cutting and are far inferior as a bicycle security measure when compared to a U-Lock. Many U-Lock manufacturers offer a bike replacement policy up to the value of your bike if it is ever stolen. It is not an insurance policy, but a good second option. Replacement policy amounts vary depending on the security level of the lock. Below is additional information about bicycle security.

PROPER LOCKING TECHNIQUES:
  1. Use a good quality U-Lock. Cable locks are convenient, but not as secure. Thieves often carry bolt cutters with them to help steal your bike. No matter how strong or thick a steel cable is, they can be quietly cut in a matter of seconds.
  2. Place the lock mechanism close to the ground (but not on the ground) to reduce the distance any downward pry force can be applied.
  3. Lock all of the easily removable components of your bike together and all to the rack. If your seat or other accessories are easily removed, take them with you if possible.
  4. Make sure that your U-Lock fits your bike and all of its removable components. Take up as much room inside the shackle without leaving to much free space.
REGISTERING YOUR BICYCLE

Registering your bicycle doesn’t guarantee that your bicycle won’t be stolen, but it can greatly increase the odds of having it returned to you in the event it is ever stolen and subsequently recovered. There are a couple of ways that you can register your bicycle:

A subscription registration program exists with the National Bike Registry. More information can be found at www.nationalbikeregistery.com You may also register your bike with UVM Police Services. For more information please call (802) 656-3434 or visit www.uvm.edu/~police
