Palm Backup

Backing up the data on your handheld is one of the easiest and most important things you can do. If you've set up your Oracle Sync Utility, you don't have to worry about your Calendar. It's already backed up on our Oracle Calendar server. However, your Address Book and such are stored only on your handheld and the computer with which it syncs.

When things go wrong on a handheld device, data loss is a very likely result. Back it up on a regular basis; once per month is a good, safe bet.

Backing up your Palm on a Windows machine:

  1. Click on the Start Menu
  2. Choose Run
  3. Type "c:\program files\palmone\"
  4. There should be a folder that somehow indicates it's your Palm username. My Palm is registered to "Justin Howard," and my user folder is called "HowardJ." Just copy this folder to another location, and your data is backed up. The best thing to do would be to use SSH and copy it to your zoo account.

Backing up your Palm on an OS X Machine:

  1. Double-click the Hard Drive
  2. Go to Users
  3. Go to your username
  4. Go to Documents
  5. Go to Palm
  6. Go to Users
  7. Your username should be there. Just copy the folder to a new location. Make sure you COPY and don't MOVE it. Copying it to your zoo account using Fugu or Fetch (both of which can be downloaded from www.uvm.edu/software) would be a great idea.
