Configuring for use on the UVM Network

ETS currently provides support for the following activities on Apple Mobile devices:

The sections below cover the procedures to enable support for UVM wireless and email on your device.  All users should take note of the "prerequisites" section of this page.  If you wish to configure UVM email services on your device, you must first complete procedure for configuring the VPN client.

Prerequisites:

Before installing either profile, you must be running firmware version 2.0.0 or later on your device. You can verify your firmware version using either iTunes or the "Settings" app on your device.

From iTunes:

  1. Connect your device to your computer and launch iTunes
  2. When your device appears in the iTunes sidebar, click on its name.
  3. Click on the "summary" tab.
  4. Look for the information field "Software version".

From your iPhone/iPod Touch:

  1. Start the "Settings" Application
  2. Tap "General", then "About".
  3. Look under "Version".

If your version number begins with "1", you must update your device before installing the VPN and Email profiles.  iPod Touch users must purchase the iPod Touch 2.x software update ($10 plus tax) though the iTunes store.  The following URL will take you to the iPod Touch upgrade page in the  iTunes store:
https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/touchLandingPage
(Note that you must allow your computer to open this link in iTunes.  The page cannot be viewed from an ordinary web browser.)  NOTE: Users of University-owned iPod Touch devices are eligible for a free upgrade to the 2.x software release. Details on this free upgrade are available by request.

Users of first-generation iPhone devices are eligible for a free upgrade to the 2.x software.  All iPhone 3G devices will have the 2.x software pre-installed.

In order to install the 2.x firmware update, you must be running iTunes version 7.7 or later.  You can get the latest version of iTunes from Apple at the following URL:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If you already have installed iTunes, you can get the latest version using the Apple Update software on your machine.

If configuring your device from on the UVM Campus, you will need to connect to the "Cat's PAWS" wireless network before proceeding.  To connect to "Cat's PAWS":

  1. Start the "Settings" application on your device.
  2. Tap the "Wi-Fi" entry.
  3. From the list of available networks, select "Cat's PAWS".  When you have connected to the network, a blue check mark will appear next to the "Cat's PAWS" name.

Configuring support for UVM VPN services and Cat's PAWS Wireless only:

  1. On mobile Safari, go to the URL: https://scripts.uvm.edu/apple
  2. Select the "uvm_vpn.mobileconfig" file from the list of available mobileconfig files.
  3. When prompted, select the "Install" option. The configuration file is not signed, so you can ignore the red warning to that effect.
  4. You will then be prompted to enter your UVM NetID and password to use the profile. Enter your NetID, hit "Next", then your password, then "Next", and hit "done" when you receive the "Profile Installed" dialog
  5. You can activate the VPN client by going to the "Settings" application, then sliding the "VPN" item to "ON". If the VPN connects successfully, you will see a warning dialog concerning appropriate use of UVM VPN services, to which you must reply "OK".

Configuring support for UVM Mail and VPN/Wireless:

Apple mobile devices include support for the IMAP mail protocol which is used on UVM's centrally supported mail servers. Please note that downloading mail to an easily portable device such as an iPhone can have security implications. Given that these devices can be easily lost, you will need to take some basic precautions in protecting the data on your mobile device.

For this reason, the UVM Mail/Wireless mobileconfig file enforces the use of a device passcode at install time. After completing the configuration, you will be required to enter a passcode each time you unlock your device.

  1. On mobile Safari, go to the URL: https://scripts.uvm.edu/apple
  2. Select the "uvm_email.mobileconfig" file from the list of available mobileconfig files
  3. When prompted, select the "Install" option. The configuration file is not signed, so you can ignore the red warning to that effect.
  4. You will then be prompted to provide some additional information to complete the configuration. Owing to limitations in the structure of the config file, you will have to enter you credentials three times before completing the process. Enter your NetID, hit "Next", then your password, then "Next", and hit "done" when you receive the "Profile Installed" dialog
    1. First, you must enter a friendly name for your new email account profile on the device. (A default value of "UVM Mail Account" is provided).
    2. Next, you must enter your email address as it will appear on messages from you. (We recommend using the firstname.lastname@uvm.edu format)
    3. Enter your UVM NetID when prompted from your IMAP account username
    4. Enter your UVM NetID password when prompted for the outgoing mail server password.
    5. The next two dialogs will appear much like the previous two... you will need to re-enter your UVM NetID and password for the outgoing (SMTP) mail server.
    6. You now will have to set a passcode for your device. Your passcode must be at least four characters long.
      NOTE:
If you limit your passcode to four numbers, you will bepresented with a more simple numeric keypad for entering your passcode in the future. However, if you wish to use a more complex alpha-numeric passcode, you may enter one at this time.  Be advised that while use of mixed alpha-numeric passcodes is a good security practice, the on-screen QWERTY keypad can be frustrating to use.
    7. You will need to re-enter your passcode to proceed
  5. If you entered all information correctly, you will see a "profile installed successfully message. You then can access your email by going to the home page of your device, and tapping the "Mail" application.
  6. If you do not see the "Profile Installed" dialog, you will will need to return to Safari and repeat the steps above.
