the web site I reviewed this week is: Kathleen Kolb.com

Please reply by Dec. 11 with comments, criticisms, suggestions.

I'll own up in advance to being prejudiced!

Kathleen is a dear friend, past neighbor, and illustrator of one of my wife's Children's books.

But mostly, she is a great artist, and in my opinion, a website that starts with such appealing original art is off to a good start.

What I like about the site is...

Is the clean appearance that highlights her artwork, well-chosen backgrounds that are not distracting, easy navigation, and a short, well-chosen selection of external publicity links.

What I don't like...

Is a broken link (blog) that hasn't been fixed in a year! This sends a clear message that the site is not current.

Goals...

Short term - Publicity for the artist (gallery of work) and listing of exhibits and public events!

Long term - To connect on a more personal level with viewers by including a brief bio, blog (presumably), and some links to interviews and stories about the artist.

Ultimately - To encourage viewer's to buy the artist's work.

Results (improvements)...

A short audio track, describing each of Kathleen's works, might be an appealing addition, especially if it in a format that can be easily accessed by smartphone users. It might help keep the focus on the visual pictures, while still giving them added background information about each picture. This might especially appeal to those who recognize the location and/or subjects of the picture. Many folks are more likely to buy a work of art that represents something, or someone, they know.

Intended audience...

Prospective buyers of her art.

Navigation...

I liked the hidden menu's that expand horizontally within the ample "grey-space" on each page, although I found it took a moment to realize the layout of each menu level. Highlighting of chosen menu items helped, but might have been extended to include the relevant items in the next level.

Links were clear, but not distracting, reasonably current and not too numerous (a feature that I find distracts from the message on many sites).

Why will people visit?

To learn about the artist and hopefully attend a show and buy their art from them.

Would you go back to this site?

Yes! - if only to look for new works and dream of seeing them on my own walls
