Overview:          A one credit studio course  focused on the fundamentals of document design

Objectives:        1. Apply the basic vocabulary and principles of design for effective composition.

2. Build a foundation for using thoughtful visual rhetoric and purposeful communication design.

Attendance:      

Mandatory, as we meet only once a week. I will start class promptly Ð please be on time so you will not miss material.

You will get the most out of class if you are prepared Ð keep up with assigned readings, etcƒ

I will post information to the class via email. Students are required to check UVM email regularly.

It is the studentsÍ responsibility to keep track of any absences that occur, and for any content missed during any absences.

 

Athletes with away days in their competition schedules must provide schedules to the instructor in the first 2 weeks of class.

Religious Holidays:  Students have the right to practice the religion of their choice. Each semester students should submit in writing to their instructors by the end of the second full week of classes their documented religious holiday schedule for the semester. Faculty must permit students who miss work for the purpose of religious observance to make up this work.

 

Grading:

Grading is based on two presentation portfolios of work; one handed in at midterm, and one during the final week of classes.

                       

REQUIRED Textbook:

Document Design by Kimbal  and Hawkins  Purchase this at the UVM bookstore or online as soon as possible. You will retain this for use throughout your PCom course sequence.

 

Supplies:            

Flash drive/digital storage device, sketchbook, 9x12 presentation notebook with plastic sleeves ($8.29 at bookstore)

 

Reminders:

Music with earphones is allowed only when open lab work is underway, as long as it does not disturb others.

Please turn other electronic devices/ cell phones off or on vibrate when class is in session.

Working in and outside of class on projects is expected. Please be patient in lab as I go around to review work individually.

No emailing or other work should be done while class is being held.

NO FOOD OR DRINK IS ALLOWED IN CLASS Ð accidents can destroy equipment.

Remember to log off when leaving and clean up around your work unit.

 

Grading system: The academic honesty policy as outlined in the Cats Tale is in effect for all assignments and exams.

C+=77-79   C=74-76    C-=70-73     D+=67-69     D=64-66     D-=60-63
