Beautiful buildings!

Every city looks different, and IÕm constantly struck by the features that make a city unique. Many of the houses in our part of Hobart were built in the 1800Õs. I notice dates on nearby houses in the 1880Õs or 1850Õs. Many of them are brick or wood, some are of a warm, local sandstone. What really catches my eye is the lovely metal lacework that decorates the front of the houses. Sometimes itÕs just a little curve of metal lace around a door frame, or a simple metal strip at the top of the porch. On other houses it can be much more ornate and include panels of the porch railing as well. The metal lacework is always painted. I like it best when it is painted white, but some of the colorful ones can beautiful too. Sometimes a stone house will have the lacework as well. I love to see the dressed stone on the front of the houses and the rough stone as soon as you turn the corner to the side. IÕve even seen some metal trim on new apartment buildings. Roofs are mostly corrugated metal, but some have tile. Metal roofs are always painted.

The wooden trim is a rough echo of the metalwork.
