WINDHAM TECHNICAL SCHOOL, Willimantic, CT: LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE, 1976
WESTERN HIGH SCHOOL, Las Vegas, Nevada: HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA, 1971

Associate MEMBER: SIGMA XI Research Foundation.
Former PRESIDENT & SECRETARY: TRI BETA Honor Society, Trinity College, 1988-91.
Undergraduate STUDENT FELLOWSHIP AWARD: Univ. of Vermont, 1990.
TRI BETA outstanding undergraduate RESEARCH AWARD, 1991.

Research Experience:
LABORATORY TECHNICIAN III, UVM dept. of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics
5/94 -present: Study of the invasion mechanisms of
Actinobacillus
actinomycetemcomitans (Aa), a periodontal pathogen, and its effects
on the host epithelial cell. This involves the interaction and entry of
bacteria into human cell lines. Invasion has been analyzed by fluorescent
and light microscopy and ELISA technology. Molecular biological techniques
have also been used to clone fluorescent proteins into Aa and E.
coli to follow this process. Bacterial proteins involved in this process
have been analyzed by SDS-PAGE and immunoblotting. As lab coordinator,
my skills extend to budget management and supplies ordering, computer and
equipment maintenance and general management of the physical laboratory.
Principle investigator: Dr. Paula Fives-Taylor.
LABORATORY TECHNICIAN II, UVM dept. of Medicine, Burlington, VT.
11/93 -5/94 Study of the effects of bismuth subsalicylate, the active
ingredient in Pepto-Bismol, on toxin production and secretion of enteric
pathogens. This involved the development of an assay to quantitate toxin
production using human cell lines and aerobic, anaerobic and microaerophillic
organisms. Statistic analysis was performed on the data using the Minitab
computer software. Principle investigators: Dr. Deiter Gump and
Dr. Diane Hutchins Meyer.
LABORATORY TECHNICIAN, Wyeth Nutritionals, Georgia, VT.
10/91 -11/93 Quality assurance testing of infant formula during and
after its production. I performed all assays in both the CHEMISTRY &
MICROBIOLOGY labs to determine nutritional content or contamination in
this food product using techniques such as titrations and protein extractions,
Gene trak DNA detection system, ELISA, and HPLC. Supervisor: Dr.
Scott Donnelly.
TECHNICIAN ASSISTANT, UVM dept. of Animal Sciences, Burlington, VT.
9/90 -10/91 Study of Listeria spp. as a food borne pathogen.
I assisted the graduate students with in the laboratory by preparing and
plating samples, counting CFU's and recording results, preparing media
and operating the autoclave. Attended lab meetings and reviewed relevant
papers. Principle investigator: Dr. Catherine Donnelly.
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP, UVM/Microbiology & Molecular Genetics
5/90 -8/91 Identification of biochemical factors which enhanced the
growth and invasion of A. actinomycetemcomitans, a clinical organism
implicated in periodontal disease. I performed and analyzed invasion assays
of chemically treated organisms, developed and analyzed growth curves of
the organisms and performed SDS-PAGE analysis of the organism for protein
isolation. Maintained human cell lines and bacterial strains. Attended
lab meetings and department seminars. Researched and reviewed related papers
and presented my final research project to the department in a seminar.
Principle investigator: Dr. Paula Fives-Taylor. Advisor: Dr.
Diane Hutchins Meyer.
Concurrent Occupation:
HEAD RESIDENT, Champlain College, Burlington, VT.
1/90 -present: Management of a college residence hall and residential
Wellness Program. This involves my assuring that the students live and
study in an emotionally healthy and physically safe environment. As such,
I live in a dormitory with 40 students. I am available for help, advice,
campus referrals and daily personal interaction at all times. I am also
advisor for both in-house and community projects. Supervisor: Ashley
Mikell.
Former Occupations:
LICENCED PRACTICAL NURSE, The Pillars, Shelburne, VT.
9/89 -9/90 Performed duties of a clinical nurse in an ambulatory care
retirement home. As such, I dispensed medications, carried out physicians
treatment plans and established a friendly and helpful rapport with the
residents. I assisted with the daily care and routines of some of the residents.
I kept careful patient records and reported to their physicians.
PEDIATRIC NURSE, University Pediatrics, Burlington, VT.
6/84 -6/89 Performed duties of a clinical nurse in a pediatric office.
As such, I made initial assessments of well infants' and childrens' growth,
and motor, speech and social development. Obtained lab specimens such as
blood, urine, and throat cultures. Evaluated degree of illness or emergency
and established treatment plans with parents over the phone and in the
office. Assisted physician in treatments or exams. Counseled and taught
health and nutrition practices. Supervisor: Susan Victory.
PEDIATRIC NURSE, Mousetrap Pediatrics, Enosburg Falls, VT.
2/18 -9/88 Supervisor: Dr. Jack Mayer.
VISITING NURSE, Franklin County Home Health Agency, St. Albans, VT.
11/77 -4/78 Cared for elderly or disabled patients in their homes, including
bathing, cleaning, cooking, shopping, and companionship.
LICENCED PRACTICAL NURSE, Medical Center Hospital of Vermont, Burlington, VT.
1/76 -1/77 Carried out duties of a hospital floor nurse on a neurosurgery
ward. Cared for patients after neurosurgery due to head or back trauma.
Community Activities:
FRESH AIR FUND HOST, St Albans, VT. 1978 -present.
VOLUNTEER, Planned Parenthood of Vermont, St. Albans, VT. 1979 -82.
