Response to Instruction Principle Investigators Katharine Shepherd and George Salembier

This project is aimed at enhancing student outcomes of middle and high school students through the development of a Response-to-Instruction model (RtI).

Project staff and local school partners from Milton Middle/High School and Mount Abraham Union Middle/High School will use the $49,500 award to design a Response-to Instruction Model, an approach that uses student responses to high-quality instruction to guide educational decisions about the efficacy of instruction and intervention, eligibility for special programs, design of individal education programs, and effectiveness of special education services. The model also uses a system of tiered, evidence-based classroom practices designed to promote student engagement and success in meeting state and national standards.

George Salembier and Katharine Shepherd, both assosciate professors in education, will serve as co-principal investigators on the project, which includes the establishment of a statewide advisory board and collaboration with the Vermont Department of Education and local partners to obtain additional funding for national implementation and evaluation of the model.
