Daily Comments from Last week:
Chelsea Mitchell: Stoics are right about social connections being basic
to human nature. They do not seem like 'externals.' And yet, Stoics
count other people as externals. Is there a contradiction?
Sean Pinard: "He IS a soccer player, so he OUGHT to kick the ball."
What's wrong with that?
Jesse Wiener: I was taught you cannot conclude an OUGHT from an IS,
because that would be a logical fallacy.
Nicole Ovregaard: Wouldn't it be nice to be a stoic. You could try your
best and never be disappointed by the outcome of your efforts.
Alyssa Rupp: But can't you always make your best better? How can you
say you've REALLY tried your best? When can results be truly
indifferent?
Cole Depuy: Predetermination is pointless: believing it saps motivation
and hurts morality. I'd rather believe the future is undetermined.
Dan Messenger: What happens when obligation and necessity conflict? I
NEED sleep, but I OUGHT to go to class. How do you decide which is more
important?
