Study Questions for Final

These are hints for the sort of thing to expect on the final.

Know the following figures, their approximate chronology, and what they did for democracy:

Solon
Cleisthenes
Ephialtes
Pericles

Know generally what the structure of the Athenian government was:

Boule (council of 500)
Ecclesia (Assembly of citizens)
Areopagus council
Board of 10 generals
Ostracism
sortition/lot
archons
Law Courts

Know the basic outline of the Peloponnesian War (which will be covered in our next class, on Thursday the 23rd).

Know the basic plot outlines of the plays we read: main characters and the main actions.

Note for the Final: One sort of question I like to ask are short identifications for quotations. For example, I might give you a quoted passage taken from Hesiod, another from the Persians and another from Herodotus and ask you to identify the author and work. I do not choose the most obscure passages, but I try to avoid "dead giveaway" passages. In other words, if you did the reading with some care, you will recognize the passages as things you should know, but you will have to think about it a bit.
