Primary sequence
refers to the present or future time: usually present and future tenses, some perfect tenses:
  • 'present' subjunctive for things that are at the same time as the leading verb
  • 'perfect' subjunctive for things that are before the leading verb
Secondary sequence
refers to the past: imperfects, some perfects, pluperfects
  • 'imperfect' subjunctive for things that are at the same time as the leading verb
  • 'pluperfect' subjunctive for things that are before the leading verb
