Greek 002: Introductory Greek
Text: Hansen and Quinn
Grades:
Final: 10%
Midterm if requested by students: 10%
Quizzes (one take-home quiz per unit and one in-class
vocabulary/paradigm quiz per unit): 60-70%
Homework: 20%
Note: Homework is not "corrected" by Prof. Bailly. Rather, he
checks to see if there is an honest attempt at an answer for every
question, clear evidence of corrections, and an effort on your
part to ask questions to clear up confusions.
Attendance: Attendance:
It is hoped that you find class helpful, but it's up
to you. If you don't come to class, leave a hard copy of the
homework in Professor Bailly's mailbox in the Classics Department
the day it is due. You will have to show up for the quizzes or get a
really bad grade, however. Sorry about that.
All work is mandatory: if you don't show up or don't hand it in and
have not made other arrangements with me beforehand, at midnight of
the day it was due, your grade will become 0% unless you have a
genuine last-minute emergency (e.g. car crash, stroke). Plan ahead,
please. It's a life skill.
Please let me know of any religious observance days you need or any
days you need for athletic or other extra-curricular events well
ahead of time so that we can think of a good way for you not to fall
behind.
Umpteenth Version of the New World
Order
(Meet the new boss, same as the old boss)
The basic tasks of each unit: we have a first half-session,
two full sessions, and a second half-session
for each unit:
NUMBERS=your work outside of class. This is always to be done and is
just automatic: if Prof. Bailly fails to remind you, it is still to
be done. If you miss a class, you can predict what is to be done.
--- = what happens in class.
---The first half-session will be spent explaining the
paradigms, vocab and grammar of the new unit.
1. Memorize vocabulary: start this as soon as you can: generally
speaking, this must be started right after the last unit,
but can be started earlier.
2. Memorize paradigms: start this as soon as you can: generally
speaking, this must be started right after the last unit,
but can be started earlier.
3. WRITE OUT half (rounding up) of each "Drill" section in the unit
and be ready to hand them in in class after correcting them
yourself in class.
---The first full session of each unit will
be spent correcting the drills and asking questions about them (they
will be collected this session), and reading the Greek at the
end of Units.
3. WRITE OUT half (rounding up) of each "Exercise" section in the
unit and be ready to hand them in in class after correcting them
yourself in class.
---The second full session of each unit will be
spent correcting the exercises, asking questions about them (they
will be collected this session), reviewing and answering
questions about the take-home portion of the quiz.
5. Vocab and paradigm quiz on the second half session of
each unit. Hand in take-home quiz (it always consists of the last 5
items in each Exercise section PLUS "verb synopsis" starting
with UNIT 2).
We have 14 units to get through, including the Introduction and
three review units: at 3 days per unit, that means that we have just
enough time to get through half of this book.
VERB SYNOPSIS will start with Unit 2: it consists
of every single form that you know of the first verb in the unit
done in the first person, the second verb in the unit done in the
second person, and the third verb of the unit done in the third
person: singular one week, plural the next, etc. When we learn them,
participles and infinitives will be required for each synopsis.
There are also "review units": do the Review questions that
have no answer key and the first self-correcting exam for the first
full session, and the second self-correcting exam for the second
full session. Bring your questions to class. The remaining
class time will be spent working on the Greek at the end of the
Units (we will re-read it if we've already read it) or doing other
activities.
You may retake any quiz (take-home or in-class) at any time
up until the last day of classes by doing the last 5 items on each
Drill section for that unit as well as the Exercise sentences that
were not handed in or on the take-home for that unit. All you have
to do is do the work and then clearly label it as "RETAKE OF ______
QUIZ FOR UNIT _____."
You may work at your own pace if you are ahead of the
rest of the class. The same assignments must be handed in, and
I will help you as much as I can. You will, however, take the
vocabulary/paradigm quizzes for each unit at the same time as the
rest of the class. If the rest of the class catches up with you, you
must rejoin their pace.
There are 4th hour "review sessions" with the grad students.
They are the "4th hour" which makes this worth 4 credits.
A note about vocabulary and
paradigms: you must learn these steadily every day a little
at a time. If you leave it until just before the test, chances are
you will have a miserable frantic experience, poor immediate
results, and even poorer long-term results.
