Since my first visit to the Soviet Union
in 1991, I have amassed hundreds of photographs, slides, and digital images.
Here I have posted three galleries of images from my field research in
the Zakarpattja region of Ukraine, drawn from slides and digital photographs
taken from 1996 to the present. Zakarpattja is located in the southwest
corner of Ukraine, and much of the region is rural, mountainous territory.
I made my first visit to this area of Ukraine in 1995, and in 1996-7, I
spent 15 months living primarily in the village of Apsha, gathering data
for my dissertation. Since then, I have returned to Zakarpattja and
to the village of Apsha numerous times with different research agendas,
but always with the goal of seeing old friends and rediscovering the beauty
of its people and places.
