Abbrieviated Biography

Dr. Bolanle Adetoun is the Head of Gender Division for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Abuja, Nigeria. Her research foci include Gender Issues, Population and Reproductive Health, Agriculture, Social and Rural Development, Ethnic Conflict, Youth, Peace & Human Rights. Her current research is entitled “Fostering Women’s Empowerment: Gender and HIV/AIDS Epidemic in Nigeria.

Adetoun has her Bachelor of Science Degree in General Agriculture, a Master of Philosophy degree in Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology and a doctoral degree in Rural Sociology from Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Additionally, she had a post-doctoral training in Demography from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York USA.

She started her career life as a lecturer with Obafemi Awolowo University. She later coordinated the Planning, Research and Statistics Department of the National Centre for Women Development in Nigeria and was the 1999 Director for the Annual Gender Institute of the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) Dakar, Senegal - the foremost organization for social science research in Africa. She was also the coordinator of the Centre for Sustainable Development and Gender Issues (CESDEG), a non-governmental development organization (1997 -2004. She has won many awards, done consultancies, conducted various national and international researches, and published many scholarly articles (including an edited book) in her areas of interest.

Responsibilities: I was In Charge Of the Overall Management of the Institute. I Drew the Course Outline, Participated In the Selection of Junior Researchers and Supervised the Work of Other Lecturers\Resource Persons. I Also Delivered Some Of The Lectures. The Theme Of The 1999 Institute Was "Men, Women And The African Plural Economies". At This Institute, Using Micro-Level Analyses And Macro-Data We Examined The Gender Differences In Access To Basic Assets And Resources Needed To Participate Fully In The African Plural Economies. We Also Discussed The Sectoral Policies And Priorities That Need To Be Put In Place For Human Capital Development And Overall Growth In The African Economies. I Prepared both the Technical and Administrative Reports for the Year’s Program.

Responsibility: I was the one that wrote The Centre’s Brochure (Describing the Proposed Mission and Activities of the Centre) that was published. I Set Up the Computer Unit for the Centre And Supervised the Data Entry on Nigerian Women Achievers. I Coordinated The Budget Plan For The Centre. I have also attended many other national and local conferences, seminars and workshops in Nigeria.

I have also had accumulative experiences with working in various Women and Children Programs. While on the Faculty of the Obafemi Awolowo University, I was actively involved with the university extension program - "The Isoya Rural Development Programme" which was based in my department. I was active in the design and implementation of outreaches to rural women and children.
