North Prospect Street

Researched By Todd Goff

69 North Prospect Street

The 1890 Hopkins Map indentifies a barn on this site belonging to Mrs M.H.Wheeler. The 1890 Burlington City Directory lists a Miss Mary H. Wheeler as a widow living at 87 North Prospect.2  David Blow indicates 87 North Prospect was built in 1877.3

An historic site survey of 69 North Prospect--a house built in 1892 for C.S. Boynton--mentions this Queen Anne Style carriage barn with jerkin head roof on the lot, stating the house is “distinctive for its it matching high style barn.”4

Sanborn Insurance Maps for 1885, 1889, 1894 or 1900 do not cover this area so it is difficult to determine if it is a late addition to the estate of 87 North Prospect or part of 69 North Prospect.

1890 advertisement for Dr. Willard’s sanitarium

The 1890 Hopkins Map indentifies Dr. A.J. Willard with this building. [5] The 1888-1889 Burlington City Directory lists his office on 2 Colchester Avenue and his residence at 244 Pearl Street.6 In 1890 it shows him having moved both his residence and office to the corner of Loomis and 89 North Prospect Street, listing his business as, “Prop’r Nervine Establishment and Rest Cure.”7 An advertisement for his business appears in this directory also showing a drawing of the house.

The 1880 Census indicates Willard was born in 1833. He graduated from Yale in 1853 and served briefly as a minister, eventually moving to Vermont in 1855. He attended the University College of Medicine and graduated in 1877.  In 1881 he was appointed as Instructor of Chemistry and Toxicology at the school and also became superintendent of Mary Fletcher Hospital.  This home, designed by Burlington architect Z.T. Austin, is a 24-room sanitarium that opened on Dec 5, 1888.8
