This address was known as 49 Archibald
Street at the time it was built. It has undergone several changes, the main ones
being the rear additions. The house is vernacular Italianate in style. This is evidenced
by the bracket detailing on the front entrance supports, as well as the flattened
pediment of the window crowns. There is a possibility that the front door is original;
the glass panels are typical of Italianate doors.[1] The side entrance porch is probably
not original; it is not seen on the 1890 map.[2] The windows are two-over-two double
hung sash. The clapboard and slate roof are both probably original.
This house was built probably between 1879 and 1881, the year that George Parent
first shows as being occupant of this building.[3] He was listed on the 1890 map
as being the owner of the building; however, he is not in the 1890 directory at any
location in Burlington.[4] The last year he is listed in the directory is 1889-1890.[5]
After that, a series of new occupants were living in the house throughout the 1890s
and early twentieth century.
