131 Archibald Street

The house at 131 Archibald Street was built circa 1888-1889.  The original massing depicted on the 1890 map was a single block, which indicates the rear porches were later additions.  It is unclear which façade was the main entrance.  The Bright Street entrance is more elaborate, but in all the city directories the address is given as 131 Archibald Street.  The bracket detailing, in addition to the entry porch with a pyramidal hipped roof on the Bright Street façade suggest a late vernacular Italianate or Queen Anne style.  All of the windows, except for the bay window on the Bright Street façade, are one-over-one double hung sash.  Bay windows are not depicted on the 1890 map; the window is on the 1978 map, but is probably earlier, and is perhaps original.[1]  It has a stone foundation.[2]

This was the second home of William D. Langois, who was first located at 123 Archibald Street in 1888-1889.[3]  This house was built around 1889-1890, according to city directories.[4]  Langois is named on the 1890 Hopkins map with this property.[5]

This building was also part of the Vermont Sites and Structures Survey.  The date it gives for the construction is circa 1885.  However, there are no references documenting this date.[6]
