This
building at 123 Archibald Street has undergone substantial changes since the 1890
map. The gable-front portion is original; the side entry is not completely
original. While there was a side entrance depicted on the 1890 map, it was
not as substantial as the current structure. It is likely that there was a
small side entrance porch that was either demolished or remodeled before 1978.[1]
The gable-front portion is similar to other buildings found in the Old North End.
It contains a rear chimney, and retain its original clapboard. The windows
are two-over-two double hung sash, and are possibly original.
William Langois is listed on the 1890 map at this location.[2] There are entries
for him on Archibald Street in the city directories stretching into the mid-1870s,
though it is unclear if those entries correspond to this building. He was employed
by B. S. Nichols and Co., J. R. Booth, and was a butcher. In the 1889-1890
city directory, he is listed as living next door on Archibald on the corner of Bright
Street (131 Archibald/7-9 Bright Street).[3] After his move to that location,
the house at 123 Archibald was continually occupied, though by no one individual
for a long period of time.[4]
