81 - 83 Adams Street

This Stick Style two-and-a-half story, six bay by three bay house is located between South Winsooski Street and South Union Street facing north. This house was originally built as a two-family home and is used as apartments today. This structure remains largely unchanged over the years.1

On the 1890 Hopkins map of Burlington , the names on the property are W.B. Jones and M.M. Talcott.2 M.M. Talcott is listed as residing at 84 Elm Street (what is now South Winooski Street ) and it is assumed that she merely rented 81 Adams Street .3

The first known residents of 81 Adams Street are A.S. Wright, an employee at D.W. Robinson; Grace Wright; Mrs. A.B. Dow; and Miss Bessie Wright.4 A.S. Wright continued to reside at this address until 1895. His occupation changed from traveling salesman to insurance agent during this time. Gracie Wright resided with him again when she is enrolled as a student at UVM in 1889-90. Miss Bessie Wright also lived at this address again from 1892-1895.

Wylie B. Jones, a stenographer employed at Wells-Richardson & Co., is the first known resident of 83 Adams Street .5 He remained at this address until 1892.
