21 Blodgett Street

Huff is the name that appears at this location on the 1890 Hopkins map.[1] William D. Huff is listed in the 1889-90 city directory as having a home at 21 Blodgett Street. Mr. Huff was an employee for the Baldwin Mfg. Co. at the time.[2]

Huff is listed as living at 21 Blodgett in 1891 as well. In addition, Joseph Brockney made a home at this address. Frank L. Washburn employed Brockney. Washburn was a painter with a shop at 226 Main Street and home at 144 Shelburne Rd.[3]

In 1892, William D. Huff is listed in the city directory as being employed by Dr. S.W. Webb, of Shelburne.[4] It is unclear what the nature of Huff’s employment was for the famous Seward Webb. Further investigation would be necessary to arrive at an answer.

In 1895, Huff teamed with James Mitchell to start a restaurant called Huff and Mitchell at 161 Main Street and moved to 70 Cherry Street.[5]

1902 John W, McCarthy, is listed as living at 21 Blodgett Street. The Shepard & Morse Lumber Co. employed McCarthy through the 1930s,[6] and he lived in this home with his wife Mary until his death sometime before 1942.[7]

The home at 21 Blodgett is a 1x3 bay, vernacular gable-front house. The structure is 1½ story with vinyl siding, asphalt roof, and 2/2 wood windows. A one story, 1x4 bay entrance appendage is on the south façade. The hip roof is supported by wrought iron corner post and railing.
