44-46 Marble Avenue

Unlike surrounding structures, 44-46 Marble Avenue is a large, flat-roofed building, suggesting its former commercial role. Vermont Historic Structures & Sites Survey [132] suggests a circa 1880 construction --- an estimate that has to be adjusted upwards by three years in that Marble Avenue, according to the Survey's own narrative, wasn't laid out until 1883. (City of Burlington annual reports relating to expenditures on street repair, maintenance, and improvement also point to a 1883 date for Marble's street designation.)

The 1890 Hopkins map of Burlington [133] lists J. Liasse at this location. According to the 1890 city directory, Joseph Liasse, newly moved from 3 Spruce Street in 1888-89,[134] owned and ran a grocery on Marble Avenue. [135] Sanborn Map Company's 1906 fire insurance map of Burlington, the first one made of Marble Avenue, shows a grocery on the west (44 Marble) side of the building and a meat market on the east (46 Marble).
