After the Civil War, much of New England experienced a tremendous population growth.  With the increase in city population came an influx of new business and a desire for more skilled craftsmen to help industrialize these cities.  Burlington was one of the cities that experienced a boom in both its population and its economy following the Civil War.  In the year 1877, Pine Street saw an increase in house development, specifically due to the lumberyards located at the end of Pine Street.  A lot of the inhabitants in the Old North End during this time period held various handyman jobs, as well as craftsmen that enabled Burlington to grow into the prosperous city it has become today.
