Abridged Class Notes Feb 7th Educator as a role model...power of observational learning. - people learn what to expect through the experience of others - people gain a concrete understanding of the consequences of their actions by observing others and noting wheter the modeled behaviors are desired or not. - it is most powerful when the person being observed is powerful/respected or is considered to be like the observer. When Modeling - model realistic goals - don't be hypocritical (ex: don't smoke preach no smoking) Invest time into imporving your own perosnal health as you would expect your students to. Feb 14th Health Literacy - Help students develop the skills they need. Balloon exercise. Students need: support, opportunities, feeling of safety, feeling of satisfaction, love, encouragement, challenges, commitment, goals...etc... Coordinated School Health, role of parents in education, importance of communitcation. Feb 28th Develop a safe & positive learning environment (story of Teddy) - believe in the student - help him/her to have success - give the student value - be a significant adult in the student's life - meet students where they are at Students average only 17% of the assests nationwide. Mar 28th Knowledge does not guide behavior Importance of focusing on SKILLS not just information Bumbling of DARE (police officer is not a teacher, not usally long term, talk at students not practicing) Apr 4th Abstinence only education now supported by federal government - if adopted a techer couldn't discuss other forms of birth control. Civil Union bill opened door for dialogue about sexuality education If having a discussion about sexuality education invite administrator so he be informend to answer parent's questions |
