Advising

We're here to help you. If you are a student of geography who is interested in declaring a major or a minor in the subject, please contact the department office if you have questions. Students who declare a geography major will be assigned a geography faculty advisor.

What does an advisor do?

Think of an advisor as your academic liaison. An advisor is meant to be an approachable faculty member, one who is also skilled in your chosen area of expertise and who can help enhance a student's relationship with the university. Advisors can provide valuable information and insight when an advisee is selecting courses. They can explain the organization and policies of the college and help an advisee keep on track towards fulfilling all the requirements needed to graduate.

When you meet with your faculty advisor, consider discussing more than which courses you intend to take. Other topics might be initial planning for study abroad, internships, careers in geography, leadership opportunities, or selecting a minor.
