Rick Boothby

Film Television Studies Guest Speaker

Professor of Philosophy at Loyola University Maryland, Rick Boothby spoke at UVM in November, 2014. Boothby talked on the psychoanalytic understanding of the formation of subjectivity from the initial confrontation with the other.  Boothby is interested in how the traumatic relationship with the other has a formative affect on the individual's trajectory.  An expert in German idealist philosopher G.W.F. Hegel, Boothby also visited a Film and Television Studies senior seminar, taught by FTS Professor Todd McGowan, focusing on Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit, in which they were examining films like Caché, Danton, and She's Just Not that into You.  Boothby is the author of one of the most important books written on Jacques Lacan called Freud as Philosopher: Metapsychology after Lacan.
