Several weekends ago, we returned to Tzintzutzan, a town we visited
when we arrived in Morelia and had enjoyed. This is the town we
will return to for the Day of the Dead celebrations (when people gather
at the graves of their ancestors, eating their ancestors' favorite
foods and drinking their ancestors' favorite drink (tequilla)) and we
wanted to see it again in its "normal" state before it became inundated
with people. We'll return here on Nov. 1 to see "Dia de Muertos".
On the edge of town are ruins,
round-based temples called yacatas. From some approaches, the
sides are angular; from others they are rounded. The site sits on
a hill overlooking the town.
When Mike and Sue were here at the end of October we visited the ruins again:
The drive between Morelia and Tzintsutzan is lovely. Flowering
agaves, fields on pink Cosmos, hills and lakes, even the errant cow
herd on the highway.
