For another four day weekend in May we visted the town of San Miguel de
Allende, about 3 hrs north of Morelia. It has a reputation for
being a beautiful town, but dominated by rich ex-patriot Americans.
We saw the beautiful town part and the general fanciness, but we
really didn't see all that many foreigners.
The center of town is dominated by the very ornate cathedral near the small central plaza.
We still marvel at the horses and burros and cows on the streets, some
of them just roaming aimlessly, others being used as beasts of burden.
Lots of small streets and hills to wander around.
One of the things we enjoyed was a vist to the Botanical Garden in the dry hills just outside of town.
Rather than hike a circular trail at the botanical garden, ending up
back at the entrance, we decided to descend into a canyon and walk
directly to our hotel. It was a fun expedition; Sarah enjoyed it
the least because the cactus and Acacia spines kept penetrating her
shoes and embedding themselves in her feet!
Queretaro
After a couple
of days in San Miguel we stopped briefly in the nearby city of
Queretaro. Like Morelia it is one of the old colonial
cities of Mexico and it played an important role in the history of the
republic.
