Early March 2007

March 3: We went up to the top of the hill and saw the very tail end of the full lunar eclipse.    When the moon rose here there was only the tiniest bit of shadow left on the top.  We did get to see a nice sunset, though!  Get a load of Margaret in a skirt - it was about 55 degrees that evening.

March 4: Margaret's 15th birthday!  Look at her ears!  Story about them below.

Opening presents:

Margaret and Sarah made the birthday cake, from start to finish, keeping with the tradition of an animal-shaped cake. Margaret figured that a monarch butterfly was appropriate. . . .

We had a nice afternoon in Huandecareo, where there are lots of thermal pools. It was crowded on a Sunday, but still nice to be in the water.  When else will Margaret get to go swimming for her March birthday?  Or eat tacos in her swimming suit in March?

One of the major expeditions for her Birthday was going to get her ears pierced.  Almost every female in Morelia has pierced ears, but it was surprisingly hard to find a store that could do it.  Mexicans have their ears pierced at birth, I guess.   After walking all around the center of town we ended up back near our house-- at a tatto parlor in the basement of a mall!  It turned out to be a great place!  Jhon (no, I didn't spell his name wrong) was very gentle but firm - he was quite fast and almost before she knew it, Margaret had pierced ears.

Here's Helen, paying for the "operation": $8 (includes sterile earrings!).  I think he does more tattoing than "perforaciones" (piercings).  They were watching professional wrestling when we arrived.  It was an unforgettable experience.
