The neighborhood dogs
With the aid of some dogfood, Sarah has befriended many of the local
neighborhood dogs. Most of these dogs seem completely
unaccustomed to friendly attention and it took several days and several
visits for them to trust us. They were more used to being shooed
away by people than petted. By the same token, the neighbors
seemed somewhat bemused that anyone would want to pet the street dogs.
But here are photos of some of
our
favorites:
This is Fluffer, or Fluffball. (names provided by Sarah)

We are saying hello to three dogs who live at an
iron-working shop near our house: "Mommy" (she just gave birth to 5
puppies), Fluffer, and old Whitie.

These are some of Mommy's pups. We were surprised to learn
that Fluffer is the father!

"Mommy". We were walking by when the owner fed
these dogs:
he threw big chunks of uncooked chicken to them (heads, legs, etc.) -
it appeared that Mommy swallowed these whole, she was so hungry!
Below is Delta-dachsund - the first dog Sarah befriended. Now
whenever she sees us, she rolls over on her back to get her tummy
scratched:

In mid-December, she had puppies!

Germie

This is Brownie, or Brownster:

And this is Whitie. (Creative names, huh?):

None of them can get enough petting - no matter how long we stay with
them, petting and loving them, they jump up when we leave and start to
follow us home. We have stopped feeding them (because they really
DID follow us home when we fed them) but they still run up to see us
when we walk down the street.
December 1, 2006: We
are adding the pictures below to show the "lovely" gray mutt that was
attacked by two pit bulls (the t-shirt is to prevent her from chewing
on the stitches in her belly - she had intestines hanging out of her
belly after the attack, a punctured lung, a broken rib, and a pierced
throat. Her puppy is on the right, who ran away during/after the
attack and wasn't found for about four hours. They are both well
and together now.
