I know a family with four sons. What is the probability of
that occurring by chance? If they have another child, what is the probability that
it, too, will be a boy? |
Each child has a 50% chance of being a boy, and the sexes
of the four children are independent genetic events. So, the
combined probability is 1/2 x 1/2 x 1/2 x 1/2 =
1/16. The next child still has a 50% chance of being a
boy. |
