2010 Sister City Delegation

In February, 2010, a sister city delegation from Burlington to Bilwi included graduate students from Professor David Hutchinson's Johnson State College counseling classes. Their focus was to learn about health care practices in the community and compare youth training expereinces with Debby Hodgson's CEDEHKA program. The students managed to carry down in their luggage fifty pounds of soda can tabs that the young people in CEDEHKA use to create jewelry. The tabs had been collected in Vermont by Ronald McDonald House and were generously donated to the sister city program. The students while in Bilwi did a service project for the Alcaldia of planting trees at the site of a public elementary school.

Participating in the February delegation as well were Richard Kemp and Charlie Delaney. Richard is a long-time sister city supporter who had traveled on the ship in 1986 bringing supplies from Vermont to "Port". This was his first time back since then. While in Bilwi we filmed an on-site episode for Richard's Burlington TV show, "Near and Far". Charlie has visited Bilwi many times since the 1990s, taking on small construction projects. On this trip he and his friend Elwin Finley built tables for the Barrio Cocal School.

Dan Higgins and Jane Kramer continued work on the sister city art collaboration project. Dan brought a video tape of Vermont poet Tina Escaja introducing herself and inviting collaboration with a Nicaraguan poet, and while in Bilwi he taped Brigitte Zacarias reading her poetry in Spanish and Miskito to take back for Tina. These video collaborations build on last year's experience joining Nicaraguan musician Remigio Hodgson and Vermont musician Gordon Stone.
