PLAN I and the PLAN I Extension

 {Plan I (June 23  July 10), Plan I Extension (June 23  July 14)}

Plan I

        This session involves regular lab meetings, electives, negative research projects, numerous practice rounds, and an extremely low staff-to-student ratio.  For 7 years, the UTNIF Plan I in Debate has been an extremely successful workshop for debaters of all levels of experience.  Our staff is the most motivated and qualified in the country, and we pride ourselves in bringing top-notch instruction to students for reasonable rates.  Students stay in comfortable private dorms and tuition includes a full meal plan in one of the nation's best cafeterias.  In addition to hundreds of hours of instruction from this country's most advanced debate experts, each Plan I student will receive a copy of a complete affirmative with extensions as well as all of the negative research projects produced by the workshop.

Plan I Extension

If students want to participate in the intersession immediately following Plan I (July 10  14) we now offer the Plan I Extension.  The Extension will extend the workshop four days, including room and board.  The four day period following Plan I will involve directed learning, including micro-debates, small research projects, and group discussion.  The intersession also involves the construction of theory blocks and a 6-hour video-taped dialogue relating critical theory, post-structuralism, and performance to debate.

The SuperSession

{The UTNIF SuperSession (June 23  August 2)}

  The Best of All Worlds

        SuperS ession Students will enjoy Plan I, the Intersession, and Plan II.  This is a popular option for debaters who want to be fully prepared for success at the beginning of the season.  ALSO, SuperSession students will receive a free copy of all the Wave 1 affirmative lab evidence as well as all of the negative generics and supplements.
Plan I involves regular lab meetings, electives, negative research projects, numerous practice rounds, and an extremely low staff-to-student ratio.  Our staff is the most motivated and qualified in the country, and we pride ourselves in bringing top-notch instruction to students for reasonable rates.
        Plan II Labs will meet for both affirmative and negative work, but students will have the freedom to choose the instructors they work with and the arguments they research.  Plan II allows maximum creativity and expression in an intense and inspirational debate environment.  Our unsurpassed staff pulls out all the stops during Plan II; experimenting with cutting edge debate theory, extracting concepts from authors like Foucault and Spivak to apply to the debate process, and honing speeches on issues like counterplan net benefits, narratives, topicality, and kritiks.  Students stay in comfortable private dorms and tuition includes a full meal plan in one of the nation's best cafeterias.

  The Intersession

The Intersession will add four days to the middle of the workshop, including room and board.  This four day period involves directed learning, micro-debates, small research projects, and group discussion.  The Intersession also involves the construction of theory blocks and a 6-hour video-taped dialogue.  This year's intersession dialogues will focus on kritiking, answering kritiks, and contemporary issues relating debate to critical theory, post-structuralism, and performance.

The Top Lab & The Scholars Program

{The Experienced Lab During Plan 1 (June 23  July 10)}

 Get Ready For One of the Most Intense and Rewarding Lab Experiences in the Country

We have already started recruiting the top returning debaters to join us in what we believe will be the best lab experience in the country.  Lots of practice rounds, complex theory discussions, critical theory reading groups, and intense research are only the beginnings.

 The Scholars Program

        The scholars are chosen by merit and each scholar will receive a small reduction in tuition as well as evidence supplements.  We plan on expanding this program to at least 8 students such that a majority of students in the top lab are scholars.  The scholars will be given teaching responsibilities as well as debating in demonstration rounds early in the workshop.

 The Instruction

        We are pleased to announce that Kevin Kuswa and David Breshears will be working with a Third Lab Leader to guide and direct the top lab at the UTNIF.  This group will invariably learn as much from each other as from the instructors.

        Kevin Kuswa, ABD, is currently a debate coach and a doctoral candidate in Rhetoric at UT. Kevin was named the College of Communication's 1999 Graduate Student of the year and has taught upper-division Argument for UT during the past 2 years.  His coaching for UT spans 7 years, including UT's only appearances in the NDT semi-finals.  In his first year as a debate coach, Kevin helped to coach Dartmouth to the NDT championship. As a debater, he reached the NDT elimination rounds four consecutive years, winning in 1992. As a high school debater for the Albuquerque Academy, Kevin was in the finals of the 1988 ToC and was named the top individual speaker at NFL nationals.

        David Breshears, MA, is currently a debate coach and a doctoral student in Rhetoric at UT. As a student, David was the first MA recipient of the prestigious J. H. Jones fellowship, awarded to the top scholar in the college. David is an experienced and talented debate coach, taking North Texas to the elims at the NDT before coaching multiple first round teams to elims at the NDT for Texas.  As one of UT's most successful debaters, David made four appearances at the NDT, receiving First Round At-Large bids three of those years.  He and his partners reached the finals of Harvard and won the Emory, North Carolina, USC,  and UNT Tournaments.

PLAN II and PLAN II Extension

{Plan II Extension (July 10  August 2), Plan II (July 14  August 2)}

  Plan II

        This session involves more self-directed learning than Plan I.  Labs will meet for both affirmative and negative work, but students will have the freedom to choose the instructors they work with and the arguments they research.   Every year the UTNIF Plan II in Debate attracts more and more students.  The reason for this is simple: Plan II allows maximum creativity and expression in an intense and inspirational debate environment. In addition to hundreds of hours of instruction from America's most advanced debate experts, each Plan II student will receive a copy of a complete affirmative as well as all of the negative research projects produced by the workshop.

  Plan II Extension

If students want to participate in the intersession immediately preceding Plan I (July 10  14) we now offer the Plan II Extension.  The Extension will add four days to the front-end of the workshop, including room and board.  The four day period involves directed learning, micro-debates, small research projects, and group discussion.  The intersession also involves the construction of theory blocks and a 6-hour video-taped dialogue relating critical theory, post-structuralism, and performance to debate.

Novice Debate Sessions

{Novice I (June 23  July 10) and Novice II (July 14  July 31)}

The Novice Debate Sessions are a new addition to the UTNIF for the 2001 year.  The sessions are the same, the only difference being the dates.  The length, instruction, intensity, and price are all identical for Novice I and Novice II.

The Concept

The Novice Sessions will emphasize small learning environments, the foundations of contemporary debate theory, and sound principles of public speaking.  Each debater will experience multiple practice rounds, hands-on assistance researching and writing blocks, a practice tournament, and interaction with all the UTNIF instructors.

The Instruction

We are pleased to announce that the Novice Sessions at the UTNIF will be directed by Dr. Joel Rollins.  Because we guarantee a small student-to-staff ratio, more instructors such as Cindy Kim (UT) and Ken Ogden (Stratford) will join Dr. Rollins in the Novice Sessions as enrollment increases.  The novice debaters will also have opportunities to work with all UTNIF staff members, and many electives will be offered to allow a diversity of instruction.  It really is an unparalleled opportunity for inexperienced debaters to work so closely with Dr. Rollins, the author of an extremely well-received dissertation on the practices of education.  Joel is also very excited to work closely with students just beginning to enter debate.

Moreover, Dr. Joel Rollins, PhD, has served as Director of UT's debate program for the past 12 years, during which time UT teams have reached the finals of every major national tournament.  Over the past nineteen years, his lab students have won every major level of competition, including the NDT, the NFL, and several State Championships.  Joel is also Chair of NDT District III as well as being one of the most socially active and engaged Directors of Debate in the country.
