Details follow. The Department is one of the best in the country in Communication, including internationally-known scholars in both speech and mass communication. We have approx. 30 faculty and 100 grad students. We grant both Master's and Ph.D. degrees. We are located in scenic Salt Lake City, UT, site of this year's National Debate Tournament, and the 2002 Winter Olympic games. The Debate team consists of approx. 15 undergraduates, with one faculty Director and 3 graduate assistants. We anticipate that working with the Debate program constitutes 1/2 of a graduate student's teaching load. Travel with the teams is required, in addition to on-campus preparation activities, hosting 1-2 tournaments per year, and some paperwork. Assistants are also full-time graduate students in the Department of Communication. Admission is competitive, and is based on GPA, GRE, writing sample, personal statement, and letters of recommendation. Details about salary are being negotiated right now with administrators, but will be competitive with graduate assistant positions at other Research I institutions. Tuition waivers are provided for teaching assistants.
